Semen Testing

Post-vasectomy semen testing is conducted to ensure that your vasectomy is successful.

Testing must be completed at least six weeks after your procedure and after at least 15 ejaculations. Some patients may require several months before their test is successful. In the interim, continue using other forms of birth control.

We currently only provide semen testing for DrSnip patients. You do not need an appointment to drop off your sample, but please make sure we are accepting samples that particular day. Testing calendars for each of our location are below. We will notify you the same day of your result, by phone or email based on your preferences.

If you would like to test at a laboratory closer to you, we will order the test on your behalf. We will need the name, address, phone and fax number. The test results will be sent to us, and we will call to discuss them with you.

COVID-19 Update

To adhere to social distancing guidelines proposed by local and federal healthcare officials, we have changed our procedure for dropping off test samples. Please refer to Step #7 below in our Vasectomy Test Instructions. Do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions.

Vasectomy Test Instructions

  1. Wait for at least 6 weeks and at least 15 ejaculations after vasectomy. If this is a REPEAT test, check the box on the form, and wait until after the due date, if indicated.
  2. Check the Testing Schedule calendar below for our testing dates and hours.
  3. Specimens may be collected up to 24 hours in advance. Refrigerate if held overnight.
  4. Collect semen specimens into a clean plastic cup or glass jar with a tightly sealed lid. (We will not accept samples from a condom.)
  5. Write your name on the container. Place the container in a clean paper or plastic bag. Complete the test request form and place it in the bag. Write your name on the bag.  Specimens cannot be accepted for testing without a completed form and your name written on the container.
  6. Deliver your specimen to the clinic only during scheduled testing times.
  7. Place your sample in our drop-off bin and ring the bell. During the COVID-19 epidemic, there is no need to enter the clinic.
  8. We will contact you with your test result the same day and send you a final report or instructions for repeat testing, if required.
